Thousands of our New Jersey neighbors require some extra support to manage the tasks of daily life safely. To address this need, there are more than 2,000 group homes for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities throughout the Garden State. For many residents of these facilities, it is difficult or impossible to speak up about their challenges and the problems they face. Accordingly, the state is supposed to regulate and monitor group homes to ensure that disabled adults are receiving the care and treatment they deserve. Shockingly, an investigation indicates that there have been dozens of unexplained deaths among residents of these facilities over the past decade or so.

A review by reporters at northjersey.com found nearly 50 tragic cases since 2013 where vulnerable group home residents died under questionable care conditions. Despite the state’s oversight, the report says details surrounding deaths in these facilities are often scant, leaving many families in anguish and demanding answers. When information was finally obtained, numerous deaths seemed to be preventable. Group home residents choked, wandered into dangerous traffic unsupervised, suffered from bedsores, dehydration, and malnutrition, or were simply left alone without vital medical intervention. The fatal incidents in these settings have raised critical concerns about accountability and safety.

You might have questions about unexplained injuries to a loved one who is in a group home for disabled adults or a senior nursing facility.
