Increased Height of Pickup Trucks Cited as a Safety Hazard

Your imagination is not getting the best of you if it seems like many passenger vehicles are taller than ever. The height of the average pickup truck is more than 10 percent higher than vehicles in that category a generation ago. Many SUV models also put the driver farther above the ground than in the recent past. Though opinions differ on the aesthetic of these extra-tall machines, researchers say that they increase the likelihood of an accident occurring in front of the driver.

On some heavy-duty models, the front edge of the hood now sits 55 inches or more off the ground. For comparison, this is approximately as high as the roof of some sedans. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), pickups, SUVs and vans with hoods rising at least 40 inches above the ground have a 45 percent higher incidence of fatal pedestrian accidents. The elevated positioning compromises the vehicle operator’s sightline, creating a type of frontal blind spot that can hide a pedestrian, cyclist, wheelchair user or smaller car directly ahead.

Pickup trucks contain elements of both commercial and consumer vehicles. However, some models lack enhanced safety features common on newer passenger cars, such as automatic braking and pedestrian detection. At the same time, no commercial driver’s license or additional training is required to operate a pickup. The durability of these larger vehicles might also lead them to stay on the road longer, so that many of the trucks you see were made before technology improved.

While manufacturers say that they are making great efforts to help reduce the number of truck accidents, they note that buyers often prefer the larger pickups. Some people look for a vehicle with greater ground clearance, towing capability and cargo space. Another IIHS finding indicates that even though pickups and SUVs are also heavier on average than past models, the increased weight does not make an accident more likely.
