Motorcyclist Dies After Being Ejected in High-Speed Crash with Car

When a vehicle collision occurs, especially at high speeds, bodies of the involved individuals remain in motion until something stops them, or their momentum subsides. Inside a car or truck, accident victims usually are constrained by their seat belt or the body of the vehicle. Someone riding a motorcycle does not have this type of protection. This means that the sudden stop that happens in a crash could cause them to be ejected a significant distance from their bike, greatly increasing the likelihood of a catastrophic or fatal injury.

A tragic New Jersey incident shows just how much force is involved when a car and motorcycle come into contact. Brick resident William Swiderski died on April 19 following a collision between his motorcycle and a Honda CBR on Route 37 West in Manchester. Upon impact, Swiderski was ejected from his bike, landing more than 140 feet away. The crash also set his motorcycle on fire. According to police, speeding and failure to obey a stop signal contributed to the crash, but they did not say which party violated the laws.

The inherently exposed nature of motorcycles makes riders particularly vulnerable in collisions with larger vehicles. Along with injuries caused by initial contact with a car or truck, the harm that results when their body is thrown to the ground can be even worse. Personal injury claims stemming from motorcycle accidents often seek extensive damages as compensation for broken bones, ligament damage, traumatic brain injuries and severe abrasions sometimes referred to as “road rash.” Some victims are never the same due to partial or total paralysis, a permanent disfigurement or an amputation.

Cases such as Mr. Swiderski’s frequently result in wrongful death actions. In these matters, the personal representative of the decedent’s estate pursues damages that can address funeral costs, income the victim would have earned during their lifetime and the loss of companionship experienced by bereaved family members.
