Motorized two-wheel vehicles, usually referred to as e-bikes or e-scooters, are more popular than ever in New Jersey. In addition to the number of people have bought e-bike and e-scooters, several cities in the state have stands where the vehicles can be rented using an app. Driver habits do not evolve as rapidly as technology though, so there are many instances where riders are seriously injured, or even killed, in collisions with cars and trucks.

One fatal New Jersey accident involving an electric scooter occurred May 15 in Edison when a 22-year-old man was struck by an SUV while crossing Route 1. Though no charges were filed at the time, there are many hazards that can lead to injuries for riders of e-bikes and e-scooters, including:

  • Inattentive drivers — Collisions with motor vehicles are a significant risk, particularly when drivers fail to see riders. These crashes frequently occur in low-light conditions or when riders are in blind spots. Distracted and intoxicated motorists are especially dangerous to riders on smaller vehicles, because a driver might not notice them out of the corner of their eye or when they are in an impaired state.
  • Lack of safe infrastructure — There has been some progress in the construction of dedicated bike lanes and safe riding paths across the state. However, many places still force riders to share the road with larger vehicles, increasing the risk of collisions. Poorly maintained roads, potholes, and debris can also cause accidents, especially for riders traveling at higher speeds.
  • Aggressive vehicle operation — Despite the inherent risks to everyone involved, many New Jersey drivers use their cars and trucks to express their frustrations. This can be very dangerous if someone behind the wheel is upset because they have to slow down a bit or wait at an intersection because an e-bike or e-scooter is passing through.
