Auto insurance companies and risk analysis firms are on the frontlines when it comes to identifying factors that make vehicle accidents more likely. An annual report based on an exhaustive review of insurance claims offers various conclusions about trends recognized in car crash data nationwide.
Some findings in the LexisNexis Risk Solutions 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Trends Report probably don’t come as much of a surprise, while others might point to a phenomenon that you didn’t expect. Trends that were identified within the data include the following:
- Distracted driving among younger motorists — For more than a decade, members of Generation Z (born between 1997 and 2012) have been hitting the road, and more young people from this group are getting driver’s licenses every week. While people of all ages are prone to dangerous behaviors, such as looking at their phone while behind the wheel, the incidence of distracted driving among Gen Z is a major concern. Most teen drivers don’t remember a world before smartphones and many have a very hard time staying away from texting, browsing or interacting with apps while driving, contributing to a surge in auto accidents.
- Dangers associated with electric vehicles — As more drivers transition to electric vehicles, the data shows that these cars and trucks are 17 percent more likely to been accidents that give rise to claims than models with internal combustion engines. There could be several reasons for this. Electric vehicles are concentrated in more crowded areas with busier roads. Also, the fact that EVs run so quietly might make it less likely that a vehicle or pedestrian will recognize the danger in time to avoid a collision.
- Increases in speeding violations — According to the report, there have been double-digit percentage increases in both major (at least 15 miles per hour over the posted limit) and minor speeding violations over the past year.
Whether the accident where you were hurt involved one of the risks cited by the report or not, it takes a knowledgeable lawyer to give you the best chance of collecting appropriate compensation for your medical expenses, lost income and other damages.
