In an instant, one careless driver could change many lives forever. A fatal auto accident doesn’t just end the life of the victim, but inflicts permanent harm on the people who loved and relied on them. The recent loss of a beloved first-grade teacher in Bergen County shattered not just her family, but the school community where she worked. It also raised numerous questions about the motorist who struck her and ways the tragedy might have been prevented.

Englewood teacher Elizabeth Feliciano-Rosa, 54, was crossing the street at the intersection of Washington and Madison avenues in Dumont when she was hit by a pickup truck driven by 94-year-old Ernest Hofmann. Hoffmann was later charged with serious criminal offenses, including knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death and obstructing the administration of law.

While many seniors continue to drive safely, age-related factors can increase the risk of accidents. Physical changes, such as decreased vision, slower reaction times and reduced mobility, can impair driving ability. Pedestrians are in particular danger if a motorist is no longer seeing the road as well as they should be. Someone in a crosswalk is harder to spot than a vehicle, and a driver is not able to hear them like they would a car or truck.

Cognitive impairments, such as slower processing speeds or memory issues, might also make it difficult for elderly drivers to react quickly to unexpected situations, increasing the risk of accidents. In severe cases, a person behind the wheel in their eighties or nineties might also experience lapses in perception or judgment. This could be the reason why Hoffmann fled the scene after striking Feliciano-Rosa. Alternatively, he might not have realized that he had injured anyone.

While people of any age could be taking prescription medication that affects their ability to operate a vehicle, investigators should be more cognizant of this possibility with an elderly motorist. Certain pharmaceuticals cause drowsiness or confusion, creating a serious risk of an auto accident

Of course, not all elderly drivers pose a significant threat, it is important to assess their driving abilities regularly to ensure they can continue to operate a vehicle safely. Family members and healthcare providers should be vigilant in monitoring the driving habits of older adults to prevent accidents and ensure road safety.
